Data Methodology
Source: NIH RePORTER. Only public NIH RePORTER data is used in this dashboard. No data from UCSF internal systems is included.
Date field: Award Notice Date
Fiscal year: FY24 and FY25 were pulled from NIH Reporter in April 2026. FY26 data is pulled from NIH Reporter after each month ends. Each award is assigned to a fiscal year by NIH using the fiscal_year field — this dashboard uses that field as authoritative. In most cases, awards with an award_notice_date in FY26 but assigned to a prior fiscal year are administrative actions such as Change of Institution (Types 6 and 7), where a grant transfers to a new institution but retains its original fiscal year assignment.
Included: All NIH extramural awards (agency_code = NIH) · Parent grants only (subprojects excluded) · Award types 1 (New), 2 (Competing Renewal), 3 (Supplement), 4/4N/4C (Extension), 5 (Non-Competing Continuation), and Other (types 6, 7, 8, 9 — including Change of Institution and other administrative actions). Checkboxes for "New" and "Competing Renewal" use Type 1 and Type 2, respectively. A small number of Type 4 and Type 9 awards are sometimes classified as New or Competing Renewal in NIH RePORTER's online tool; in this dashboard, these are counted under Extension and Other, not under New or Competing Renewal. To date in FY26, these account for fewer than 15 cases nationwide.
Excluded: Non-NIH awards (e.g., VA, CDC, FDA) · Subproject rows (individual projects within multi-component grants — the parent grant is counted once)
Type 3 Foreign Supplements: These are included when the "Supplement" checkbox is selected.
Department assignment: Department is based on the "Department Type" field as recorded in NIH RePORTER (organization.dept_type). This may not match UCSF's internal department assignments. Some PIs may appear in different departments across awards depending on how the department was recorded for each submission.
Funding amounts: Award amounts use the award_amount field from NIH RePORTER, which reflects the total cost for the parent grant record. For multi-component grants (e.g., UG1, UM1, U01, T32), this may differ from the sum of direct_cost_amt and indirect_cost_amt, which can include subproject-level costs. As a result, total funding reported in this dashboard may differ slightly from NIH RePORTER's published totals, which may use a different aggregation method.
